Spurs look for top four boost

Tottenham Hotspur will look to boost their Premier League top four ambitions when they host Manchester United at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday, 31 January 2018, kick-off at 22h00 CAT.

Spurs have drawn two of their last three league clashes, including a 1-1 stalemate at Southampton on January 21, to leave themselves in fifth place, two points out of the all-important top four bracket.

Yet Mauricio Pochettino’s men will be hyped for the visit of United and the chance to take points off one of their rivals for next season’s Champions League berths.

United come into the game on the back of a three-game winning streak in the league. Their 1-0 victory at Burnley on January 21 may not have been a vintage performance, but it saw them placed three and six points ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool respectively.

The Red Devils should be able to give a Premier League debut to new signing Alexis Sanchez, whose Arsenal links will surely earn him a hostile reception from the Spurs fans, but could also serve to motivate him even more.

In head-to-head stats, Spurs and Man United have met in 157 matches across all competitions. The Red Devils have claimed 81 wins compared to 36 for the Lilywhites, while 40 games have been drawn.

The teams’ most recent meeting was a Premier League clash in late October 2017 which saw United claim a 1-0 home win at Old Trafford, thanks to a goal from Anthony Martial.
